Low-Dose Aspirin May Help to Ward Off Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer poses a significant health challenge worldwide, prompting ongoing research into effective prevention and treatment strategies. A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal CANCER sheds light on the potential role of low-dose aspirin in slowing or halting the progression of colorectal cancer.

For this study, researchers looked at tissue samples from 238 people, about 12% of whom were aspirin users, who had undergone colorectal cancer surgery. By comparing aspirin users to non-users, the study reveals that aspirin may boost the body’s immune system, helping to fight colorectal cancer.

Specifically, they found that spread to lymph nodes was less common in those who regularly took aspirin. Also, aspirin users had more immune cells in their tumors. In lab tests, cancer cells exposed to aspirin showed increased levels of a protein called CD80, which helps immune cells recognize tumor-related proteins. Plus, people with colorectal cancer had higher CD80 levels in their healthy rectal tissue.

This researcher suggests that low-dose aspirin may help the immune system better recognize and fight cancer cells. Yet, experts caution that aspirin may increase the risk of internal bleeding. Always consult your doctor to determine what is most appropriate for your health needs.
